Du 27 au 30 juillet 2017, se tenait la deuxième édition du Festival international du journalisme vivant à Couthures-sur-Garonne, dans le Sud-Ouest. Cette année parrainé par la cantatrice Barbara Hendrix, le festival s’est déroulé durant 4 jours. Son but : aborder plusieurs thématiques de société à travers des films, des débats, diverses interventions journalistiques et politiques, des témoignages ainsi que des animations.
Dans ce cadre, le réalisateur Claude Drexel est venue prendre la parole afin de présenter son film, « Au bord du monde ».
A Paris, la nuit, dans la rue, le métro, sous les ponts ou le périphérique, il a tenté d’établir les portraits d’une dizaine de sans-abris, afin que face à la caméra ils racontent leur vie au bord de la société.
Un long-métrage sur les sans-abris, pourquoi ?
« Au bord du monde », film aux multiples distinctions notamment présenté à cannes en 2013 et nommé pour le prix Louis-Delluc, est sortie en 2014. Sur le modèle d’un documentaire, il s’agit avant tout de laisser la parole aux sans-abris, et ce sans commentaires afin de n’entendre que leur voix. C’est donc de bon cœur que 13 d’entre eux s’expriment en toute liberté sur la vie et le monde qui les entoure.
Durant 98 minutes, pas de misérabilisme ni de trash mais de la sincérité. Il ne s’agit pas d’un film militant mais humaniste, le but étant de remettre au centre de l’image des individus habituellement relégués au bord du monde.
Telle une longue épopée de nuit, à Paris, ce long métrage est l’occasion d’une remise en question, l’occasion de rencontrer des personnalités oubliées.
« On les voit partout, mais on ne les entend nulle part »
« Au bord du monde » c’est tout d’abord un film qui aborde le regard des autres. Dans l’ombre, les sans-abris sont souvent vus tels des « parasites » pour la société. Mais la plupart des gens oublient qu’en fait ils sont des êtres humains, des personnes dotées de sensibilité. Pourtant, certains détournent le regard, sont gênés en leur présence : Pourquoi ?
« La société n’accepte pas la pauvreté. Ils sont terrifiés à l’image que cela leur renvoie d’eux-mêmes. Nous ignorer, c’est se protéger quelque part » confie Pascal, l’un des sans-abris interrogés.
Humiliation, infantilisation, perte de la dignité et de la confiance en soi, les sans-abris sont délaissés, comme s’ils n’avaient jamais existé.
Deux. C’est le nombre de fois où l’on parle d’eux pendant l’année : l’été, puis l’hiver. Le reste du temps, on fait comme s’ils n’existaient pas car les regarder, voir la vérité serait trop inconfortable.
« Les gens ne sont plus solidaires entre eux » avance Michel, Sans Domicile Fixe. Démonstration d’un individualisme grandissant, le film montre comment nous oublions progressivement l’autre. Comment nous nous octroyons le droit de le considérer comme inférieur, encouragés par notre indifférence égoïste.
« Ce sont des naufragés de la société »
Quelques habits, un duvet et parfois une tente : c’est tout ce qu’il leur reste.
Christine, à la rue depuis 4 ans confie : « J’ai tout perdu. Mes papiers, mes habits, la photo de mes enfants. J’avais un appartement et du jour au lendemain je me suis retrouvée dans la rue. Aujourd’hui, je ne sais pas quoi faire, je suis résignée ». < Chacun de ces mots soulèvent des questions sans réponses : pourquoi sont-ils là ? n’ont-ils rien fait pour empêcher cela ? pourquoi restent-ils sans rien faire, à attendre ?
Claude Drexel exprimait à ce propos que jamais il ne leur posait l’une de ces questions, ne voulant d’aucune façon les embrasser, les diminuer. Il cite alors :
« La rupture avec la société est une bascule dans un autre monde.
Comment s’est-elle produite ? Commet a-t-elle eu lieu ?<
Nul ne s’en souvient. C’est comme une autre naissance… »

Avant d’ajouter : « Je fais cela pour rencontrer la personne. Ces derniers m’intriguent. Ce qu’il s’est passé avant, je n’en ai pas grand-chose à faire. »
Face à la misère ambiante : quelques aides telles que les restos du cœur, la croix rouge, des associations, mais rien qui ne leur permette de vivre décemment.
L’espérance de vie d’un SDF en France est de 48 ans. Les conditions de vie dans lesquelles ils évoluent sont à l’origine de ce chiffre alarmant. Pas d’hygiène, pas de nourriture, pas d’eau potable, c’est un retour à l’Age de pierre. Le sommeil, lui aussi est perturbé et difficile à trouver, certains ne dormant que quelques heures par nuit.
Marco explique quant à lui que : « Le plus dur c’est l’hiver, on essaie de trouver des endroits isolés. On a pris nos habitudes et c’est le monde à l’envers, le mauvais rythme. On fait notre vie en fonction du froid et plus de nous, on dort très peu ».
Alors quand le soir nous rentrons dans nos maisons, eux restent seuls et ne peuvent compter que sur eux-mêmes. Une bataille entre l’esprit et le corps s’impose, souvent. Le corps voudrait abdiquer mais l’esprit lutte, toujours. « Car c’est humain de ne pas vouloir mourir ». Christine déclare « être surprise de se réveiller l’hiver ». Avant, elle pensait « qu’aucun être humain ne pouvait survivre à ça ».
Durant l’hiver 2016, ce sont 501 sans-abris qui sont morts dans les rues. La moyenne d’âge était de 49,6 ans. Et 11 étaient des mineurs dont 6 avaient moins de 5 ans. Des chiffres alarmants, dénonciateurs d’une grande problématique restant, en vain, non résolue.
La vie dans le rue : Toute une organisation
Afin de se nourrir les sans-abris ne comptent pas exclusivement sur la manche, celle-ci n’étant pas pratiquée par tous et constituant un trop faible « revenu ».
Généralement, les invendus sont la première source d’alimentation des SDF. Wenceslas explique : « Vers 4-5 heures du matin je dois partir de l’endroit où j’ai passé la nuit. C’est juste avant que les gens partent travailler. Ensuite, je vais faire les poubelles des restaurants». Si de nombreuses personnes l’ignorent, c’est parce que la police s’assure que l’ensemble des lieux concernés soient libérés avant 6 heures. Une pratique qui dénonce à la fois la considération de la société envers ces derniers, ainsi que le manque de moyens pour leur venir en aide.
Dans la rue, il y a également une hiérarchie. Celle-ci peut être établie en fonction de différents critères : Le logement, pouvant avoir plusieurs formes (Le squat, la cabane, la tente et ensuite le duvet), la propreté, qui est un facteur très important pour certains d’entre eux, ou encore la manche. L’un des SDF interrogés explique : « Faire la manche est aussi une humiliation. C’est donc une étape à franchir, tout le monde ne fait pas la manche ».
« On se réconforte dans les souvenirs »
Les souvenirs constituent souvent le premier des réconforts face à la solitude de la rue. Certains avancent aussi : « Le bonheur ce n’est plus le matériel, c’est la nature, les situations tranquilles, les animaux, les espaces verts. »
D’autres expliquent : « La foi aide beaucoup et surtout, sourire malgré la difficulté ».
Leur situation fait que la plupart d’entre eux comprennent ce que d’autres ne comprendront jamais : « Le bonheur c’est l’amour, les amis, la santé. Le reste est sans importance ».
Le réalisateur explique avoir voulu filmer de nuit durant tout le documentaire afin d’imager la solitude de ces personnes, ainsi que le coté « fantomatique » de leur existence, de Paris la nuit. Il a décidé de réaliser ce documentaire dans la ville lumière afin de souligner le contraste entre sa beauté et la misère de ces gens, afin que le message soit plus fort, plus puissant.
Jamais il n’a filmé en contre plongé, mais toujours près du sol, à leur niveau afin d’éviter d’avoir « un regard d’en haut vers en bas ». Le but étant justement que le spectateur se mette à leur niveau. Le but étant, qu’ils rencontrent ces personnes et qu’ensemble ils s’assoient « Au bord du monde ».
